Magnitude Scale
Magnitudes are reported using the Moment Magnitude Scale (Mw) – the modern standard. Each whole number increase = ~32× more energy.
M 0–2.9 MinorM 3–3.9 LightM 4–4.9 ModerateM 5–5.9 StrongM 6+ Major
M 0–2.9 MinorM 3–3.9 LightM 4–4.9 ModerateM 5–5.9 StrongM 6+ Major
Location Detection
Three‑layer method: (1) keyword matching from USGS place descriptions, (2) bounding box lookup for 90+ countries, (3) Nominatim reverse geocoding (OpenStreetMap) for offshore quakes.
